   Accommodation at Château Déhès

Cosy sofas in the Salon

"The house was a delight to stay in and warm and cosy while the storm raged outside."

Accommodation is spread over three floors. Although the massive walls provide plenty of insulation (both from heat and cold) there is central heating in winter.

On the first floor there are two large reception rooms.

The enormous triple aspect salon boasts truly massive beams. Furnished with comfortable cushioned sofas and carefully chosen antique furniture, the salon has a huge high fireplace for winter use. The views over the countryside from here are delightful; on a clear day you may catch sight of the Pyrenees 60 miles away. Stand at the window and watch the nuthatches flitting in the gnarled old catalpa just outside or curl up on a sofa and lose yourself in a book from the many at your disposal.

The Library

The second room, the library, is also well supplied with a good range of books and board games. There is a TV with DVD player with a small selection of DVDs and of course a comfortable sofa. There are also facilities for making drinks.

Four of the bedrooms are situated on the second floor; one with king size antique style four poster bed and spacious bathroom en suite; another with pretty 17th century style king size four poster with shower room en suite.

The other bedrooms on this floor, one with king size bed, the other with two doubles (ideal for children who don't mind sharing a bed) and cot, share the roomy romantic white stone shower room (two basins, shower, loo).

The atmospheric fifth bedroom with two single beds and bathroom en suite is situated on the ground floor.

All bath/shower rooms include WC, and there are 2 other loos as well - no morning queues!

Our beds are comfortable and a delight to sleep in.

Good quality bed linen and towels (including swimming towels) are provided, and beds are ready-made for you. Linen is changed weekly.

A cleaner comes in a couple of days a week.

The new modern kitchen is on the ground floor, convenient for meals in the garden or by the pool. Fitted with oak units, granite worktops, electric ceramic hob (no worries about the bottled gas running out) and multifunction oven, dishwasher and large fridge/freezer it is very well equipped for holiday cooking and dining. There is nothing here that we are not happy to use ourselves -  after all this is our kitchen! There is an excellent selection of recipe books to help you cope with the abundant local produce, and also an Aga for use in the winter.

Fresh local produce

"I bought some wonderfully photogenic peppers and garlic at the market in Condom."

Just four steps down from the kitchen in the stone-walled undercroft is the dining room with its long elm table, antique oak furniture and tapestry chairs for dining in style. However the call of the sun may be just too much, and in that case savour the local Gascon produce at the enormous teak table outside.

While you will enjoy being inside, and there is plenty to do if the weather is unkind, you will also enjoy the 8m square pool, fenced to comply with the recent new safety standards for pools. If necessary it can be heated early in the season. There is a shady picnic terrace, and comfortable poolside loungers. There is also a ping-pong table, and two adult-sized bicycles (helmets supplied). Or find yourself a quiet spot to snooze or read a book, overlooking the sunflower fields. Due to crop rotation we cannot guarantee sunflowers every year! Watch the buzzards, the red squirrels, swallowtail butterflies, the swirling swifts and the deer. Catch sight of the hare unawares or perhaps even a stone marten.
